Making a mark on the art scene

Our PREMARK™ and DecoMark™ material helps create a safe space for Cambridge Arts Theatre’s outdoor performances on Market Square in Cambridge, UK.

Usually, our markings are more frequently found on the roads than on the art scene, but as this case goes to show, horizontal markings can make a difference everywhere.

We got involved in this project through the landscaping and design consultancy LDA designs who had been commissioned by Cambridge Arts Theatre to provide a safe public space that could accommodate outdoor performances. The chosen location was Market Square in the centre of Cambridge because of the proximity to the Arts Theatre and the large footfall passing through.

Being a conservation area, there was a lot of consultations with regard to colours so that the introduction would be subtle and not too bold. After all the public seating areas were installed, our team completed the project with the application of no cycling symbols and a round performance area marked in red. Made with our PREMARK and DecoMark material, these markings were designed with a focus on subtlety in their appearance while still making their purpose clear.

Cambridge City Council are extremely happy with the outcome and the use of both sympathetic materials and colours used throughout the project, and they are going to explore other avenues for future use.
